Cactus Agave

Original Art by Michael Hodnett

This is one of my favorite paintings from Michael’s Southwest scenes. The way he captures what I call “drinkable colors” is breathtaking! The lotus and cactus are my favorite plants; needless to say, I might be partial to this piece, but let the beauty speak for itself.

New Mexico is a favorite place to wonder about, explore, eat, experience, shop, and learn about its history. Its immense beauty makes it one of my favorite places to get away.

I visited the ABQ Botanical Gardens with my daughter a few years before Michael and I met. I recall being in awe at this very New Mexico Agave. We had a wonderful stroll through the 36-acre themed gardens near the Rio Grande. So many spots were mesmerizing and even heavenly. I recall taking many pictures and saying I wished I had a replica, even of small portions, just like this.

Michael and I escaped for a quick R&R to ABQ, New Mexico, as I could never get enough of its beauty. Michael had never been, and I shared how I bet he would love to see these places I boasted about. We might even discover new areas I still need to explore this time together. The first stop is Sandia Peak, then Old Town, then a lovely meal at  El Pinto’s, and lastly, the ABQ Biological Park in Albuquerque!”

Michael and I spent all day at the BioPark. We spent a lot of time in the Desert Conservatory. This part featured plant life from the deserts of the American Southwest. This particular cactus, the New Mexico Agave, stood out with its “drinkable colors” of blue, teal, aqua, gray, and greens. An excellent contrast was the sun’s reflection on the hot desert bed as it glowed orange and hues of clay colors. He photographed many angles, studying its shapes, colors, and light. Michael knew this would be part of his collection on canvas. I couldn’t wait for him to finish it because my living room is decorated in a Southwest motif.

New Mexico is sure to be treasured by all who love the life, culture, and beauty of the vast sands of the Southwest! Countless sites and beauties are just waiting their turn to be painted; our digital photo album and memory bank are abundant!

This painting hangs in our formal living room. Please let me know if you want to order a Giclee print of it. It is breathtaking. Visit his website to check out other pieces he has created at michaelhodnettart.com
